If a night’s sleep is like gold for the mind, will I ever get rich?

June 20th, 2008

Hello folks!

The past few weeks of crunch time really get to me now. For some reason I can’t get to sleep, no matter how hard I try. This is the reason, why I wander around in a constant state of dizziness, with eyes burning like hell and a feeling of weakness.

This is why I started to go back to the roots. For those of you, who keep reading my blog for some time now, all this might sound a little familiar. When I was still a student at Games Academy Berlin I had plenty of methods to relieve my mind from everyday’s work. Now I struggle to even get my eyes shut at night which results in bedtimes around 2am to 3 am (and honestly even a little later yesterday).

So this is my plan:

Instead of trying to go to bed around midnight as I would normally try to do, I am going to move my bedtime to 10pm. This will hopefully confuse my body so much, that it simply refuses to resist my orders anymore and finally gets used to sleep early.

To get this amazing idea done according to plan, I am going to bribe my conscious mind with burgers and beer tonight.

Nice plan, eh?

The “shady” side of game development

May 9th, 2008

Well… It’s getting hot in here, because summer is knocking at the door of Ascaron/Studio 2 in Aachen, Germany. I know that there are places on earth that are a lot warmer than Germany, Las Vegas – for example. Or maybe Hawaii, for that matter. Still I am complaining about it and damn I hate that heat and sunshine and all that stuff.

Imagine me sitting in the office, having to work hard and concentraded. Then add some noise to the scene, because there is a construction side somewhere near the office. Got the picture? Good.

Now add an open window, so we get fresh air, and some energy drinks and coffee. Got it?

Really? Then add the fine and incomparable smell of steak and sausages and stuff like that. Yeah right, somewhere in the area around the office, some very unfair people just started their barbecue and this constantly drives me more and more into the arms of total insanity.

So maybe I should walk over to these people and tell them about the danger of Game Developers gone mad? Would that help? We don’t have a “do killer games make our kids become mass murderers” discussion for no reason. So the better get me some of tha reeeeeally good smelling barbecue over to my office.

They could just build a catapult to deliver it right through my office window – which is, as I told you – open for SOME reason, right?!

Anyways, I look forward to have my barbecue tonight. It will be the first thing I’ll do after a hard day at work, making games for people who don’t even want to share their barbecues

;)

Back again

March 12th, 2008

Well, I have to apologize to you, my much appreciated readers, for not posting any updates within the last months. I didn’t post anything because most of my time got consumed by work and a private stuff. But now I am back again and ready to feed the newest stuff to you, as soon as it comes up, on a regular basis of at least 2 times a week. I hope you guys are just as excited about this as I am.

See you very very soon!

What’s that?!

November 3rd, 2007

Well I guess this is a case of history repeating itself. I just found all that skatepunk music I used to listen to when I was a youngling. Now I start looking back on this past season of activity and find myself in some kind of “not enough time to play” mode. This is not how I intended this fall to be. On the other hand there is winter-een-mas coming up next January. So I guess I’ll just put all those nice and neat games on the shelve and play them then. But the list grows every week. I didn’t even have the chance to play the full version of Hellgate London, yet – even though I managed to play the SP Demo a lot.

Well, I’ve gotta work now…

Ages of fun

October 22nd, 2007

I guess this is supposed to be some kind of news, even though some of you might have noticed already. Last week I wrote another developer blog on my work at sacred 2. If you want to check it out, you may want to check out gamona.de(german) and rpgdot.com (english).

Because everyone tells me to use my free time to relax, I visited Cologne yesterday to attend a Manu Chao concert. First I thought “well, this might be a little fun”… how could I be so wrong! It was a great concert. How could I have missed this so long? Great music, great musicians and a really cool crowd. So yeah, this was really fun, even though it wasn’t that relaxing – I still feel the pain.

This week a lot of work needs to be done. Again. So hopefully this concert pushed me enough to stay at work a little longer each day.

Rebound

October 9th, 2007

So, yeah. I guess it’s all back to the lab again. I made some Artworks during my time off, but I really need to put more time into them before they even get near a finished state. I made some tests with acrylic color, too – looks pretty neat.

I was on vacation last week to get some air around my nose and it worked out pretty well. There was no stress, no deadline and no rush in the morning. Fine. I could get used to this. But I am glad to be back at work here in front of my desk – I figure that having nothing to do all day gets pretty boring quickly.

So here we go. Let’s get this stuff finished.

Where is that little thingy?

September 13th, 2007

So here we go, long time no post. I apologize. Fine, if you want to look at me with this glare in the eyes….

First things first, GCDC was a great success. I met a whole lot of people, attended quite a lot of interesting lectures and speeches and had a lot of parties to survive. But I got some new cards and numbers and all that related stuff, which is why I like to call this whole event a success.

The Sacred 2 booth was quite impressing, and from what I’ve heard there must have been a lot of visitors who wanted to play the game. This was fun to see; even I could only see this on Wednesday.

Back to the future: Here I am, sitting at my desk, having a cup of tea and working on some new stuff I am probably not allowed to talk about right here. Watch out for my next developer blog.

Personal life has altered quite drastically over the past 2 Months, but I like the additional time which I could get by ditching some of my friends. This sounds hard to many people, but since I have to work a lot I really want to have peace on Sundays. But when I came to visit my parents I was sort of touring around, trying to meet as many of my friends as possible – sometimes having more than 10 appointments a day. But weekends were supposed to be some kind of recreation, right? This actually felt like… work.

So I cleaned out the list a little here and a little there and “voilà!” – spare time. I like it. Really. I still have friends, but they are a lot closer to me right now. And everybody gets enough attention and time. So, this is a win-win situation. At least for me.

I even found myself thinking about starting a relationship. Maybe I already know the right woman for this. I’ll keep you posted.

A little word about commenting:

I will soon apply some spam filter thingy, but I can’t find that bookmark in the list (there simply are too many!)

So hang on a little longer.

Told you so…

August 2nd, 2007

Who was the guy telling me not to watch the new transformers movie? This was kinda cruel, because transformers is something I took with me since my childhood. Well, I lost it somewhere between ages 10 and 24 but now I want to watch that damn movie. No matter how bad it really is. But if you remember that you told me, feel free to mail me as many “told you so”, mails as you want if I don’t like it.

Manga and comic drawing gets better every day, but my Japanese only improves slowly. Maybe I need to watch some more “Love Hina”, but I don’t have that much time at the moment, so I guess I’ll stick to the textbooks.

About work:

Right now, I prepare everything I need for this year’s GC Developer Conference.

I already got my hotel reservation, packed my IGDA Membership card and stuff like that. But there is still a lot of time, yet.

If you want to meet on GCDC, just send me an e.mail to nadim@the-wise.net

What was this again… ?!

August 2nd, 2007

So, yeah. I really admit that things take a lot longer than expected. After one of my last posts I got so many e-mail with really cool ideas, that I decided to rework everything. I try to deliver the best results on the project, so just hang on a little longer.

July 24th, 2007

So my grandmother got 90 years old last week which was the main reason for a big mess in my plans. At least I managed to work a little on the concept and other projects. But hell, the weekend was even worse. I started to catch up on my work yesterday and try everything to get that damn page online.

I still search a way around all that spam, because I think that commenting will be a very important function. We’ll see. The site won’t differ much from this one, I’ll just need a couple of days, maybe one or two weeks to get everything set up and started. But then it will serve all the purposes I have in the concept outline. So the additional work will have been well invested.

Overlord has been great fun. The review is in production, but it may take a while. I started X3 Reunion 2.0 some weeks ago, too. I guess this might take a little longer. This game will not be reviewed yet, due to time management issues. I will write that one as soon as I have the time to do so.
